Jeepneys care too, you know?

For the whole month of April, I've been amazed by the segregation move of the Cebu City government. Amazed and maybe a bit doubtful. You see, I've had the opportunity to bring the topic of having an "eco-cebu city" to one of the councilors in the said city but he told me it wouldn't be possible considering the many factors the city has to face. Well, anyway the irk of the Inayawan dumpsite urged these men to strictfully enforce R.A. 9003 or the ecological solid waste management act. A lot of people complained about the system. I found a very interesting opinion article from one of the leading newspapers in the city. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/opinion/2011/04/06/so-malata-di-malata-149102

The Malata or Biodegradable waste would be collected on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while Di-malata or non-biodegradable would be collected on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not from the city. :)

This move forced several establishments, residences and mere common trash bins to have two bins to provide for the segregation. I thought this only applied to Cebu city. In the humble municipality of Consolacion where I live, I happened to ride in one of the jeepneys while on my way to the promenade. As I was about to pass my fare to the driver, I noticed something just behind the driver's seat.

Pretty neat. :) It doesn't need a sanitary landfill to overflow for us to do so nor does a statute from the mayor. Not even an enforced on a non-enforced law. If we want to help the environment, then we can and we do. The jeepneys in our place care. How about in yours?

I scream for ICE CREAM

A week and a half into summer and I'm starting to feel it bit by bit. Of course, summer isn't complete without the perfect coolers to cool the hot summer day. One perfect cooler is the Ice cream. Ice cream is a frozen dessert usually made from dairy products, such as milk and cream, and often combined with fruits or other ingredients and flavours. Gelato is another variation and is the term used in Italy. What makes it different from the usual is the lower butterfat content.

Gelato at Gelatissimo, Ayala

Every customers dilemma who enters Gelatissimo is "Which flavor do I pick?" I had the same question in mind when me and my friends entered the store. All the gelato on its respective places looked very appealing. I started my summer with a Choco Mint flavoured Gelato and I enjoyed every minute of it. "After 8" has always been my personal favorite so my dilemma was short lived.

How about you? Have you cooled your summer off?

Choco Mint Ice Cream is love

Have a happy summer 'mates!:)

Family

One thing that I love about my elementary alma matter is how everyone connected to one another. From the principals, to the teachers, to the school nears and the students to even the janitors - we all knew everyone's story. If there was one thing I wouldn't trade for in anything in the world that came from MLBCS, that would be my "family". The whole school practically became my family. They saw how I grew into a woman that I am now. It's glad to see a part of them last March 30, 2011 which was my 2nd mother Sharon Gujol's Birthday.

"Family"

Sure we have our blood-related family but these people are surely close to my heart. Have a happy summer everyone!

Recollection

Everything is still so vivid to me...

The number of times I went back and forth, up and down the solemn stairs of the administration building, and facing the not-so-kind people of the OSA department and being screamed at for not bringing a ballpen. The madame sitting behind the third window was even more kind enough to accommodate me, even if she said "Kinsa man diay ang mu eskwela inday, ikaw or imong papa? (Who's going to school, you or your dad?)" when I asked if my dad could enroll me in my behalf. She had a point there though, not minding the sarcasm. Enrollment day was as clear as the waters in the lake. A woman who was named Wynonah Van Joy Buot was sitting beside me and my elementary buddy, Victor Anthony Silva. She was fuming and not used to the system of the city as she came from Saudi Arabia (She's Filipino btw). The brown out and the advisers who were late, who couldn't forget that. And the fixing of the schedule and the choosing of subjects? Boy, that was the hardest decision I ever had to make noting that I had no idea of what I am to face. News faces, new courses, new everything. At 1pm sharp, I signed my form 5. Alas, I'm ready. First day of classes, freshmen orientation, the "Hi I'm....*insert name here*" line and freshie's night, I tore it all down.

First task given - to decorate the post for COMMUP

The experience inside is indescribable. If you all think it's heaven then think again, it's close to hell. I guess I've ranted a number of blogs about how difficult it is inside. But then I realized it wasn't as hard as we all thought. Months on to the semester and we all got used to how everything worked, including the bag counter at the library. I've found a group of friends and stood with them. I got to know their strengths and weaknesses plus learning lessons with them. There were moments when we would laugh in the school canteen, talk so loudly along the corridors and mourn over a difficult exam. Like any other group we didn't really know where were heading and people started to go off with groups, duos, trios and some felt they needed time off with another half. There were times when I wanted to be alone in my solitary mind, especially in the morning. Sitting on one of the benches on campus while contemplating about the papers to pass and materials to produce was a routine of mine which I couldn't trade for anything else. Time passed and I got to know a lot of other people from school. The spirit of being in UP eventually became very clear to me although I was very hesitant to take leap with the rest. I eventually got in the hang of things and rather much enjoyed the festivity rather than squatting in apathy.

There a million things in life I wouldn't trade for anything else. Deciding to pursue a Bachelor's degree in UP Cebu was the best choice I made so far. It is only here where I have found competent teachers who couldn't be unreasonable for giving out strenuous work. Everything paid off. I have found peace, I have found meaning, I found found friends, I found family, I have found love. For the many other things I am to tackle for the remaining six semesters of my degree, I am in no fear. I have made it for a year, who knows I'd finish on time. Maybe we aren't meant to be for what we really wanted. Not everything in life is yours to handle, the dreams which you've always wanted to chase should be set loose. After all, there are no such things as accidents and wrong turns; we we're just blind to see the beautiful picture beyond the brick wall.

Goodbye Freshman year! Thank you for all I had to go through and experience as firsts. You will forever be missed. -Feanne

Hot-DOG on stick

As we were on our way down to the highway from the GK site at Maguikay, Mandaue, we saw in horror an ordinary man slaughtering a dog being hung on a bamboo stick. It wasn't a pig. No, not even a cow. A dog. An Azkal. A poor stray dog. I took a picture of it with my windows phone but because the car was running, I wasn't able to capture a clear shot. I attempted to take another one when my classmate stopped the car but a man passed by and the slaughterer caught us looking at him. He sure was scary looking!

I already posted this picture on my facebook account weeks ago when this came out but somehow I still feel that a simple post wasn't enough. I need to share how and where we found it. In case you want to report, please do so! Protect Animals' Rights! Uphold Ethics!

Beauty beget brains

I never had any dream of becoming a beauty queen although I had attempts of being one. The woman was forced actually. (See evidence below) But then that stirred my interest for beauty pageants.

These became a big issue for a lot of sectors emphasizing on the status of women. Some claim its degrading and demoralizing. Some say its fine, they're strutting for a cause anyway. The answer is not really clear and I think it would be difficult to draw the barrier between right from wrong, and beauty and brains. In my own perspective, beauty is relative and so is intelligence.

Ms. UP Cebu 2011 Candidates
This thought just came rushing into my head as I arrived home from watching the Miss UP Cebu coronation night at the Rizal Memorial Museum and Library. The last question asked for the finalist to take a stand on whether the pageant degrades them as a woman, or something like that. Sitting and fidgeting in my seat, my thoughts caused me to ask myself also. I find the question a bit difficult with all honesty, considering the sentiments of the conservatives. But in reality, there isn't any harm in showcasing what a woman can be and what she is capable of. There isn't anything bad about using a mere woman of beauty to advocate an issue to contribute to the change that this society need. If women can, men can do so to which is subject to the interest of the immediate society.
Rejzl Awit - BA Mass Communication, 1st runner-up

Oh, That Chair!

My best friend just had her 17th birthday last Friday at the classic "Lighthouse" restaurant. I was told by elders that this restaurant was relatively old but served quality food. Their specialties include seafood and Filipino cuisine. I loved the food, there was no doubt about that (yeey, baked scallops). What caught my and my company's attention was the extravagant sofa set by renowned Cebu-based designer Kenneth Coponbue. Most of the guests were skeptical about what we were talking about. We mentioned the designer and they were like, "Oh, that chair!". An opportunity is very expensive to let go of, so here we are with pictures!

Oh, That chair!

I may not be able to give you a very comprehensive entry as of now. The lady is busy coping up with school. Watch out for Miss UP Cebu though, and vote for Rejzl Awit!
